There has been much debate in Nomadic Preservation Society about the issue of installing engines on SS Nomadic.  The view of the Trust is that we are planning and fundraising for a static, floating option in accordance with the recommendations of the independent consultant’s report which was commissioned last year to support all funding applications.

TRUST MEMBER APPOINTED IN MARITIME ROLE

Congratulations to Nomadic Charitable Trust member, Councillor Sean Neeson MLA.  Mr Neeson has been appointed as the Northern Ireland representative on the Advisory Committee of National Historic Ships, which guides the UK government on the preservation of the nation’s maritime heritage.

This week Nomadic Charitable Trust was delighted to welcome renowned maritime author and historian, William H Miller, onboard Nomadic.  As a guest lecturer on the cruise ship Crystal Symphony, Bill paid a special visit to Nomadic after the liner docked in Belfast.

ALL HANDS ON DECK AS IOD FUNDRAISES FOR NOMADIC

The Institute of  Directors (IoD) Northern Ireland division has announced SS Nomadic Charitable Trust as its nominated charity of the year 2008/09.   Money raised by the Institute will contribute towards the restoration of SS Nomadic, helping to create a lasting legacy of Northern Ireland’s rich industrial and maritime heritage.

NOMADIC IS GIVEN A HOME AT HAMILTON DOCK

SS Nomadic, the Titanic’s tender ship, is set to return to the dry dock which played a part in her construction in 1911.  The 141 year old Hamilton Graving Dock, which is now part of Titanic Quarter, is being brought back to life thanks to a £350,000 refurbishment project led by the Port of Belfast and Titanic Quarter Ltd.

DECISION MADE TO NOT REOPEN NOMADIC THIS SUMMER

WHEN SS Nomadic opened to the public last year, there was phenomenal interest in her.  An important piece of maritime history had been brought home to Belfast and during the six month period, more than 18,000 visitors came to see her before she embarked on a three year restoration process.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE SHIP NOW?

The SS Nomadic has been towed back round to Barnett's Dock in Belfast where it is being cleaned and made ready for opening for visitors again.

We will update this website when an opening date has been agreed.

We are also developing a conservation management plan which will tell us what needs to be done to the ship.  This will ensure a professional and comprehensive restoration and complies with key funder requirements.
